Coffee Picking in Panama

3/01/2010

Picking your coffee at the origin!

Before touring cafe Katowa Wednesday afternoon we made a brief detour. Spotting several indigenous workers picking coffee, we climbed the fence and introduced ourselves. While every moment in Boquete was truly eye-opening, our brief encounter in the coffee fields was unique.

You love coffee, yet until you experience a trip to origin, it's hard to appreciate how rare your coffee truly is. Our trip to Boquete Panama was a HUGE success; we saw firsthand the culture that creates the coffee we love.

Picking Coffee in Boquete

The first thing you notice in Boquete is the many cultures that interact to produce coffee. As we departed it became apparent how very small the coffee growing micro-climate is and how unique and individual each farm is. For five days we experienced first-hand the effect this has on the flavor and quality of the coffee we love and enjoy every day.

Men and women of the Ngobe-Bugle tribes were working harmoniously picking coffee cherries amongst rows and rows of coffee trees.  The supervisor, Corella, from Costa Rica, warmly invited us to the harvest.

The technique of picking the cherries requires skill; being able to swiftly twist the cherry off the stem in just the right manner so as not to damage the tree from future bearing.  A skilled picker will average seven baskets or "lata's" per day, which is hours of labor amongst the elements.

These humble and shy indigenous people are people of honor and perseverance.  A humbling connection was made for a moment; and we where immersed in the experience.
